Ian Grant: Medical Detection Dogs (This talk has been rescheduled from January)

SSC.

'Medical Detection Dogs' train dogs to detect the odour of human disease. It is at the forefront of pioneering research into the fight against several types of cancer as well as neurological conditions, bacterial infections, malaria and most recently COVID-19. Our Bio-Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of disease in samples such as urine, breath, and skin swabs. Our Medical Alert Assistance Dogs help people with life-threatening diseases and are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour, triggered by their disease, and alert them to an impending medical event. This talk will give you an insight into how the charity started, it’s current work and future ambitions.”

SSC

Paul’s journey starts at Banff, Canada heading westwards on the luxury train, ‘The Rocky Mountaineer’ to the vibrant and attractive Pacific Coast city of Vancouver. We then sail north along the Inside Passage aboard a Holland America cruise ship making several stops at ports in Alaska, and riding the White Pass and Yukon Railroad from Skagway – a route well-travelled by gold prospectors heading for the Yukon. The trip ends with the US Coastguard on a dramatic sea-rescue mission.

Swan Upping Talk

SSC

This is a talk planned for March Next Year by Mr Barber, who will explain what's its all about.
Swans are, of course, no longer eaten, but Swan Upping still takes place once a year on the River Thames. The Swan Uppers weigh and measure the cygnets and check them for any signs of injury, commonly caused by fishing hooks and line. The young cygnets are ringed with individual identification numbers that denote their ownership
